Fernández-Nield.

Automation consultant. Based in Buenos Aires, working with enterprise programmes worldwide.

Lewis Fernández-Nield

Born in Manchester, grew up in Wales. Spent most of my teens in the mountains — climbing, hiking, camping. Moved back north to study mechanical engineering, then into finance, then into technology, and eventually to Buenos Aires.

It's been a long and deliberate way around, and I wouldn't change any of it.

The path

The career started nowhere near automation. Admin work at a UK bank. Financial adviser support at an investment platform. IT support, then application support, then across into the RPA team as it formed — developer, senior developer, architect. A decade at the same organisation, building from the ground up and eventually responsible for the environments, governance and delivery standards the whole programme depended on.

Mechanical engineering gave me something more useful than the degree: a way of thinking. Understand the system. Define the constraints. Solve the actual problem, not just the visible symptom.

What drives me

I'm solution-oriented, which sounds like a CV line until you've watched someone spend three weeks on a workaround for something that needed five minutes of honest diagnosis. I like complex problems — breaking them down, understanding them properly, finding the right path through. I push back when something doesn't hold up. The seniority of whoever's in the room has never been a good enough reason not to.

The climbing and the work scratch the same itch. Find the problem. Work out the moves. Commit.

Buenos Aires

I got to a point where the ambition in me needed more room. So I made the jump, moved to Buenos Aires and threw myself into it, which turned out to be exactly the right call. What I've found here is a place with very little tolerance for pretence. People lead with common sense, say what they mean, and don't dress it up. There's a freedom in that which works surprisingly well. Their passion for everything is completely genuine too: food, football, family, work. I felt immediately at home. That's just how I am.
